Gavel to Gavel History

Gavel to Gavel Alaska is produced by KTOO-TV in Juneau, and started on the first day of the legislative session, January 19th. Cameras in the state capitol televise unedited, start-to-finish coverage of House and Senate floor sessions, key committee hearings, news conferences and other state government activity. The television service, which began in 1994, is broadcast over the air in Anchorage and Juneau, and is carried by cable systems statewide and streamed live on the Internet. Live Legislative coverage is scheduled from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each weekday, with expanded coverage when legislative activity warrants. The City and Borough of Juneau has once again provided a major grant to support the coverage. GCI Cable carries Gavel to Gavel Alaska in every GCI cable market in Alaska. Alaska Communications Systems provides the Internet service.

Gavel to Gavel Alaska began as a two-week demonstration project during the First Session of the Nineteenth Alaska Legislature in 1995. The next year, the legislature allowed full-time coverage and honored Gavel to Gavel Alaska with a Legislative Citation. We began full-time coverage our tenth Regular Legislative Session in January 2005, and the Governor marked our tenth anniversary with an Executive Proclamation.

JUNEAU ALASKA ONE OUTAGE

We’ve had some wind damage to the satellite dish in Juneau that receives Alaska One and APRN, and it looks like it will take some time to repair. We’re looking into getting temporary feeds, but for now, Alaska One on KTOO-TV is off the air and off cable, and APRN isn’t available. We apologize for any inconvenience, and we are working on it as fast as we can.

Alaska's History - It's Magic!

What does a psychic duck have in common with Alaska’s governors? Plenty, especially when they’re all a part of Alaska’s History – It’s Magic, a magical presentation highlighting various moments in Alaska’s history. Watch Alaska’s History – It’s Magic on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 8pm!

The program has been presented to thousands of young people and their families in schools and libraries in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and other Southeast Alaska communities, stimulating lots of laughter and wonder as Alaskan history comes alive through the medium of magic.

“Magic can help give meaning to historical events and facts, supplying kids with another way to enjoy their studies,” said Jeff Brown, a Juneau-based magician who developed the show. “It helps provide another handle to support their education, while at the same time providing a healthy dose of entertainment.”

The show features magical effects highlighting Alaska’s Native cultures, its Russian heritage, the Gold Rush and more, taking a live studio audience of kids and their families on a wild ride full of audience participation, amazement and plenty of amusement, gathering praise from kids, families, and educators.

The program was made possible with the help of the Rasmuson Foundation, The Alaska Humanities Forum, and the Douglas-Dornan Foundation, and was recorded before a live studio audience.

TONIGHT ON THE NATIONAL PARKS!

Starting tonight at 8pm!
“Great Nature” (Episode Five)

To battle unemployment in the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt creates the Civilian Conservation Corps, which spawns a “golden age” for the parks through major renovation projects. In a groundbreaking study, a young NPS biologist named George Melendez Wright discovers widespread abuses of animal habitats and pushes the service to reform its wildlife policies. Congress narrowly passes a bill to protect the Everglades in Florida as a national park — the first time a park has been created solely to preserve an ecosystem, as opposed to scenic beauty. As America becomes entrenched in World War II, Roosevelt is pressured to open the parks to mining, grazing and lumbering. The president also is subjected to a storm of criticism for expanding the Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming by accepting a gift of land secretly purchased by John D. Rockefeller Jr.

TONIGHT ON THE NATIONAL PARKS!

Starting tonight at 8pm!
“Going Home” (Episode Four)

While visiting the parks was once predominantly the domain of Americans wealthy enough to afford the high-priced train tours, the advent of the automobile allows more people than ever before to visit the parks. Mather embraces this opportunity and works to build more roads in the parks. Some park enthusiasts, such as Margaret and Edward Gehrke of Nebraska, begin “collecting” parks, making a point to visit as many as they can. In North Carolina, Horace Kephart, a reclusive writer, and George Masa, a Japanese immigrant, launch a campaign to protect the last strands of virgin forest in the Smoky Mountains by establishing it as a park. In Wyoming, John D. Rockefeller Jr. begins quietly buying up land in the Teton Mountain Range and valley in a secret plan to donate it to the government as a park.

TONIGHT ON THE NATIONAL PARKS

Starting tonight at 8pm!
“The Empire of Grandeur” (Episode Three)

In the early 20th century, America has a dozen national parks, but they are a haphazard patchwork of special places under the supervision of different federal agencies. The conservation movement, after failing to stop the Hetch Hetchy dam, pushes the government to establish one unified agency to oversee all the parks, leading to the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916. Its first director, Stephen Mather, a wealthy businessman and passionate park advocate who fought vigorously to establish the NPS, launches an energetic campaign to expand the national park system and bring more visitors to the parks. Among his efforts is to protect the Grand Canyon from encroaching commercial interests and establish it as a national park, rather than a national monument.

All This Week: KEN BURNS!

This 12-hour, six-part documentary series by Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan tells the story of an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence and just as radical: that the most special places in the nation should be preserved, not for royalty or the rich, but for everyone. From Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska, the series explores the stories of people, from every conceivable background, who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so, reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy.

Every night this week starting at 8pm!

Why do humpbacks sing?

Find out on Monday, August 17 at 8pm only on 360 North!

Dr. James Darling, renowned whale researcher and co-founder of the West Coast Whale Research Foundation, sheds light on the reasoning behind whale vocalization. Whales sing to one another over hundreds of miles and use their songs to navigate across oceans. Humpback whales travel thousands of miles as a group, singing to each other as they go. They can also communicate with each other over thousands of miles of ocean. The presenter explains how singing is part of their social system and community.

Breath of Fresh Air World Premiere!

Thursday August 6 at 9pm

In the 1990's, street skateboarding was on the rise, it even overshadowed the once dominant type of skateboarding called "vert" - as the preferred style. As street skating was quickly progressing, so was the small town Wasilla Alaska. By some statistics during this time frame, Wasilla was the fastest growing city in the United States. This movie tries to capture the surge of skateboarders that mirrored the growth of this frontier city during the 1990's.

Changes Coming

360 North, as part of KTOO in Juneau, along with KUAC-Fairbanks and APTI-Anchorage (KAKM), recently released a study to determine the feasibility of a unified statewide public broadcasting organization.

This new report notes opportunities offered under a unified public broadcasting model:
• A statewide, cross-platform production team
• An increase in public broadcasting’s reach in rural communities
• A unified voice in support of public broadcasting statewide
• The ability to invest in emerging media for content delivery
• The continuation of high-quality PBS and NPR programming throughout the state

The KTOO, KUAC, and APTI boards will then make a final decision on the unification this year and if approved, the transformation could begin as soon as July 2010.
