Celebrating Independence Day!

Join 360 North this 4th of July as we celebrate our Independence with Jefferson & Adams: A Stage Play, written by Howard Ginsberg and based on his original play, is the story of the turbulent 52-year friendship of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Adams’ wife, Abigail. Based on the collection of letters between these prolific founding fathers – and one equally astute wife – the play fuses compelling political thoughts with passionate personal beliefs.

Jefferson & Adams traces the period from the inception of the Revolution through the politics of two presidents to the wisdom of men who have lived long lives. It is both poignant and fitting that Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died in their respective homes on July 4, 1826 – the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Celebration 2010 on 360 North!

360 North is proud to broadcast Celebration 2010 “Our Land” live from Juneau starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 3. Celebration is a festival of Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian tribal members organized every two years by Sealaska Heritage Institute.

360 North will air three days of Celebration 2010 coverage beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 3 and running through midnight on Saturday, June 5. Live coverage will be broadcast until 11:00 p.m. each night and a repeat of that day’s events will be re-aired overnight.

The biennial Celebration event began in 1982 to celebrate Southeast Alaska Native traditions. This year, Celebration will include roughly 5,000 people, including 51 dance groups and more than 2,000 dancers from Alaska, Canada and the Lower 48 States.

Celebration has become an effective and energetic medium for encouraging families and communities to participate in traditional song and dance, arts and crafts, and the revitalization of Native languages. It is one of the largest gatherings of Southeast Alaska Native peoples and is the second largest event sponsored by Alaska Natives in the State of Alaska.

Veterans Programming on 360 North!

All weekend long, 360 North will be commemorating the Memorial Day weekend with special programming focusing on the stories and contributions of America’s veterans. This is our way of thanking all the men and women who have faithfully served our country. Tune in to watch programs like the documentary series, “Lest They Be Forgotten”, a decade long effort to record stories from hundreds of veterans, and “When the War Got Personal”, a show about the 1944 sinking of the USS Hoel, which lost nearly three-quarters of its crew. Last Night of Our On Air Fundraiser!

Tonight is the last night of our on-air 360 North fundraiser! We're airing some of our most popular programs this week and asking viewers to call in or go online to support 360 North and ensure that we are able to continue bringing you programming that matters to Alaska.

Starting at 8 PM tonight, watch Westward in the 21st Century about the Steamer Portland. When it arrived at Schwabacher’s dock on the Seattle waterfront in 1897, burdened with her ton of Yukon gold, Campbell Church, Sr. was among the 100,000 men from every corner of the globe who caught the prospecting fever and set out for Chilkoot Pass.

Then at 9 PM it's all about salmon with The Great Age of Salmon!
This 30-minute documentary brings to life a fascinating era in the history of commercial fishing at the last frontier. Featuring film footage dating back to 1926 narrated by industry pioneer Stan Tarrant, The Great Age of Salmon is the story of the early fishing industry in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, and of the Pacific American Fisheries company of Bellingham.

Juneau Wearable Art DVD

Juneau's most fashionable art event celebrated its 10th anniversary this year and is now available to purchase at Shop 360 North! The 2010 theme was Circus of Rain and outfits went far beyond a regular fashion show, blending all sorts of artistic expression into wearable designs. The event has grown over the past decade into one of Juneau's most beloved artistic events of the year.

Nancy DeCherney, Juneau Arts and Humanities Director, was very excited to offer this year's show on DVD. "What I think is the most fun about this is the creativity that it seems to unleash in people you know," she said. "It's a real opportunity for everyday normal people and artists. It just seems to bring out the wackiness and creativity in people."

AARP ALASKA TONIGHT AT 9PM!

360 North is excited to announce the launch of ‘AARP Alaska’, a new series targeting Alaskans from all backgrounds and ethnicities. The series will premiere on Thursday February 25, 2010 at 9pm. Each week, 'AARP Alaska' will address critical issues that Alaskans care about. Examples of episode topics include: learning about how to prepare a will, taking care of aging parents and estate planning. Our goal is to create a program that will not only entertain but educate and inform as well!

Special Haiti Program on Monday

On Monday, February 1st from 8am to 10am, Gavel to Gavel will air a live two hour on-air fundraiser to benefit Partners in Health's Haiti efforts. This Alaskan effort will include conversations with Alaska Gov. Parnell, reporters stationed in Haiti, Alaskans in the armed forces assisting with aid efforts and some of our elected officials.

HOPE FOR HAITI NOW

360 North will be joining countless other networks to bring you HOPE FOR HAITI NOW, a global telethon to air commercial-free on Friday, January 22, at 8 p.m.

Wyclef Jean will join George Clooney and CNN's Anderson Cooper in HOPE FOR HAITI NOW. The telethon will be hosted by Clooney in Los Angeles, Jean in New York and Cooper in Haiti. All donations will directly benefit Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF and Wyclef's Yele Haiti Foundation. HOPE FOR HAITI NOW will feature performances and celebrity appearances to be announced as well as live news reports from CNN.

Gavel to Gavel History

Gavel to Gavel Alaska is produced by KTOO-TV in Juneau, and started on the first day of the legislative session, January 19th. Cameras in the state capitol televise unedited, start-to-finish coverage of House and Senate floor sessions, key committee hearings, news conferences and other state government activity. The television service, which began in 1994, is broadcast over the air in Anchorage and Juneau, and is carried by cable systems statewide and streamed live on the Internet. Live Legislative coverage is scheduled from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. each weekday, with expanded coverage when legislative activity warrants. The City and Borough of Juneau has once again provided a major grant to support the coverage. GCI Cable carries Gavel to Gavel Alaska in every GCI cable market in Alaska. Alaska Communications Systems provides the Internet service.

Gavel to Gavel Alaska began as a two-week demonstration project during the First Session of the Nineteenth Alaska Legislature in 1995. The next year, the legislature allowed full-time coverage and honored Gavel to Gavel Alaska with a Legislative Citation. We began full-time coverage our tenth Regular Legislative Session in January 2005, and the Governor marked our tenth anniversary with an Executive Proclamation.

This is a test, this is only a test!

The Federal Government and the State of Alaska will conduct a statewide exercise of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) in Alaska on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at 10 am. Radio and television broadcast stations and cable television systems across the state of Alaska will participate in the exercise aimed at testing the capabilities of the EAS system.

Please remember, this is an exercise only. When the exercise is over, regular programming will resume.

JUNEAU ALASKA ONE OUTAGE

We’ve had some wind damage to the satellite dish in Juneau that receives Alaska One and APRN, and it looks like it will take some time to repair. We’re looking into getting temporary feeds, but for now, Alaska One on KTOO-TV is off the air and off cable, and APRN isn’t available. We apologize for any inconvenience, and we are working on it as fast as we can.

Alaska's History - It's Magic!

What does a psychic duck have in common with Alaska’s governors? Plenty, especially when they’re all a part of Alaska’s History – It’s Magic, a magical presentation highlighting various moments in Alaska’s history. Watch Alaska’s History – It’s Magic on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 8pm!

The program has been presented to thousands of young people and their families in schools and libraries in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and other Southeast Alaska communities, stimulating lots of laughter and wonder as Alaskan history comes alive through the medium of magic.

“Magic can help give meaning to historical events and facts, supplying kids with another way to enjoy their studies,” said Jeff Brown, a Juneau-based magician who developed the show. “It helps provide another handle to support their education, while at the same time providing a healthy dose of entertainment.”

The show features magical effects highlighting Alaska’s Native cultures, its Russian heritage, the Gold Rush and more, taking a live studio audience of kids and their families on a wild ride full of audience participation, amazement and plenty of amusement, gathering praise from kids, families, and educators.

The program was made possible with the help of the Rasmuson Foundation, The Alaska Humanities Forum, and the Douglas-Dornan Foundation, and was recorded before a live studio audience.

Fundraiser Success!

360 North's first ever on air fundraiser was a big success!! We'd like to thank everyone who helped make it possible. Our on air people - Marc Wheeler, Scott Foster, Beth Weigel, John Kelly and Peter Griffin really helped get people to call in and support 360 North.

And we had great volunteers from SAGA, NCADD, Bob Poe for Governor, and AmeriCorps to help answer the phones. The staff at 360 North would like to thank everyone who helped out! Thanks for watching!
