Changes Coming

360 North, as part of KTOO in Juneau, along with KUAC-Fairbanks and APTI-Anchorage (KAKM), recently released a study to determine the feasibility of a unified statewide public broadcasting organization.

This new report notes opportunities offered under a unified public broadcasting model:
• A statewide, cross-platform production team
• An increase in public broadcasting’s reach in rural communities
• A unified voice in support of public broadcasting statewide
• The ability to invest in emerging media for content delivery
• The continuation of high-quality PBS and NPR programming throughout the state

The KTOO, KUAC, and APTI boards will then make a final decision on the unification this year and if approved, the transformation could begin as soon as July 2010.

No Coverage of Special Session

The August 10th special session of the Alaska State Legislature will not air on 360 North. The session, which will address Gov. Palin's veto of federal stimulus funds for energy-related projects, will be held in Anchorage. Unfortunately, Gavel to Gavel Alaska is set up to air proceedings that take place in the capitol building in Juneau and we will not be able to show the Anchorage sessions. We look forward to bringing you all of the 2010 session starting on January 19.

"Qanuqtuurniq - Finding the Balance" - May 13, 2009 starting at 4pm

Episode on Inuit Youth, Coping Skills and Endurance: "Makkuktuuvunga, Upimmavunga – I am young, and I am proud"

Many things are being done at the community level – often by youth themselves – to help young people cope with and overcome difficult times in their lives."Makkuktuuvunga, Upimmavunga – I am young, and I am proud" will get youth talking about how they deal with problems, face challenges, and move forward. The episode will also share some stories of promising programs and activities that are making a difference in the lives of Inuit youth. It will provide suggestions for how families and communities can support youth, build self-esteem and give them hope.

Planned Power Outage For All GCI Customers

Qanuqtuurniq - Finding the Balance - DAY ONE

The First Episode of Qanuqtuurniq begins today and is on Inuit Men's Health: "Angutiili qanuiliqpat? – How are we as men?"

Airing TODAY starting at 4pm! Inuit men have experienced many changes to their way of life in just two generations. This has sometimes left Inuit men feeling lost and unsure of their place in the family and community. Men need a voice. They have important things to say and contributions to make. Programs and services for men – many created and led by men – are giving them an opportunity to seek help, better understand their needs and strengths, and revive their traditions and culture.

In "Angutiilli qanuiliqpat? – How are we as men?", viewers will see stories of community programs that are helping Inuit men to improve their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. Tune in to 360 North today at 4pm for first day of this 3-day event!

Qanuqtuurniq - Finding the Balance is an Inuit health forum that will bring health information and stories about successful Inuit community health projects.

Airing this week on 360 North, Qanuqtuurniq is being coordinated by the Inuit Tuttarvingat, the Inuit-specific centre of the National Aboriginal Health Organization. It involves a project team of health promotion experts, researchers, Inuit organizations, community members, and northern broadcasters, as well as several working groups that are helping to develop the content.

All three days of programming will be live and interactive through phone and e-mail and
aired in the Inuit language with English captions.

Qanuqtuurniq begins on Monday, May 11 at 4pm.

The Planet Forward's TV special on April 15 was just the beginning!

They're ready for more videos, essays, podcasts, photos and songs with ideas on whether we should move away from fossil fuels and if so, how it should be done. That's the Planet Forward mission: using the web and television to give citizens a chance to discuss their ideas with experts and policymakers, because changes now on the drawing board are big ones, which could affect most of us and therefore call out for input from all of us.

We're excited to have Van Jones, President Obama's advisor for green jobs, on board with us for Planet Forward's web sequel, debuting May 21. If you'd like your idea on the formula for our energy future to make it to the White House, we urge you to send us your ideas no later than May 15 - the deadline for submitting contributions that could be chosen to be discussed on the web sequel.
