The Planet Forward's TV special on April 15 was just the beginning!

They're ready for more videos, essays, podcasts, photos and songs with ideas on whether we should move away from fossil fuels and if so, how it should be done. That's the Planet Forward mission: using the web and television to give citizens a chance to discuss their ideas with experts and policymakers, because changes now on the drawing board are big ones, which could affect most of us and therefore call out for input from all of us.

We're excited to have Van Jones, President Obama's advisor for green jobs, on board with us for Planet Forward's web sequel, debuting May 21. If you'd like your idea on the formula for our energy future to make it to the White House, we urge you to send us your ideas no later than May 15 - the deadline for submitting contributions that could be chosen to be discussed on the web sequel.

Watch We Shall Remain at UAS

If you are in the Juneau area and would like to watch We Shall Remain with a group, the University of Alaska - Southeast is hosting an event each Monday night through May 11. Starting at 8pm in the UAS Egan Library, each episode will be followed by an informal discussion.

Episode 3 - Trail of Tears

Though the Cherokee embraced “civilization” and won recognition of tribal sovereignty in the U.S. Supreme Court, their resistance to removal from their homeland failed. Thousands were forced on a perilous march to Oklahoma.

Bong Hits 4 Jesus

In 2002, 18-year-old Juneau Douglas High School senior Joseph Frederick was suspended from school after displaying a banner during a school supervised event that read "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" along the route of the Winter Olympics torch. Frederick filed a lawsuit against JDHS claiming his first amendment rights had been violated. The case ended up in the Supreme Court, which ultimately ruled that a school principal may restrict student speech without violating the First Amendment.

Part of the settlement involved taping and broadcasting a student forum on free speech. That forum was held at the Juneau Douglas High School recently and 360 North will be airing it at 8pm on Wednesday, April 22. The forum was moderated by Stewart Jay, a professor at the University of Washington's Law School; and Ann Gifford, the School District's attorney.

Don't Miss Poetry Out Loud!

360 North will be airing preformances of the finalists for the 2009 POETRY OUT LOUD statewide competition on Thursday April 2nd at 8pm.

POETRY OUT LOUD is an exciting program that takes place in high schools throughout Alaska over the winter and spring. POETRY OUT LOUD encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance, which help students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and internalize our rich literary heritage.

POETRY OUT LOUD Alaska is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation, Alaska State Council on the Arts, and Alaska State Writing Consortium, and is hosted this year by the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council.

What's Happening To The Arctic?

Watch 'What's Happening to the Arctic" at 8pm on Monday, March 16!

Presented by Dr. Neil Hamilton, Director of World Wildlife Federations International Arctic Programs. Dr. Hamilton has led the Arctic Program for the past two years recruiting expertise in climate change, arctic species, governance, and communications. This program shares what he has learned about global climate change and how it affects biodiversity.

Left Handed Polar Bears? That's crazy talk!

Don't miss our next Evening at Egan lecture series, 'Left Handed Polar Bears with Richard Nelson', this Friday at 8pm!!

Dr. Richard Nelson reflects on forty years of his experiences as an ethnographer and writer in Alaska. His slides evoke the treasures of Alaska's cultural and natural heritage, while his stories underscore the value of preserving this heritage. Along the way, Dr. Nelson discusses the importance of descriptive ethnography, of learning from native traditions, of working with both the heart and mind engaged, of involving ourselves in true collaboration with indigenous communities, of learning to write well both for other anthropologists and for general readers, and of helping the next generation of Alaskan anthropologists to create themselves.

Seadogs and Toothwalkers

On Wednesday at 8pm, 360 North will be showing the Albert Karvonen short film Seadogs and Toothwalkers. Join this watery world...where devoted walrus mothers cradle their infants and migrate to remote Arctic shores, where West Coast seals and sea lions go about their fishy business, and where the waters can turn into a death-trap at a moment’s notice. Mr. Karvonen has been specializing in natural history films since 1976.

360 North focuses on natural history and outdoor programs on Wednesday nights. Don't miss Seadogs and Toothwalkers this Wednesday at 8pm!

Want to be on 360 North? Here's your chance!

Have you ever posted a video on YouTube? Have you ever fantasized about creating a video for television? Well here’s your chance! It’s not too late to create a short 1-2 minute video for 360 North’s Earth Day special! We’re looking for videos that focus on sustainability, clean energy, conservation, alternative fuels – basically anything that has to do with the environment! We’re planning an Earth Day special in April to showcase all the videos we get.

Need even more incentive? We’re partnering with PBS and all eligible videos will be sent on to PBS and could be selected to air on a national PBS show!! What’s more, you could be flown to DC to be part of the live studio audience if you video is selected!!

New Channels in Juneau!

360 North is now on Channel DTV3.2 in Juneau.

Beginning this week 360 North and AlaskaOne will be broadcast "over the air" in the Juneau area on new channels. The new service is part of the nationwide conversion to digital television, mandated by federal law. KTOO-TV’s main digital TV transmitter has been in operation since July, 2004.

KTOO-TV is now broadcasting on digital TV channel 3, and has also added digital TV service for Lemon Creek. PBS and Alaska One programming is available on DTV channel 3.1, while 360 North and Gavel to Gavel Alaska programming is on DTV channel 3.2.

Viewers outside of Juneau will not be affected by this change nor will those who watch by cable, DirecTV or Dish Network.

One of the most popular programs this year on 360 North has been Throwbacks to a Golden Age of Northwest Boats. When it comes to viewer comments, this has been one of the favorites. Alaska is full of people who love boats. This program is for those people.

Throwbacks is a documentary film that profiles the great naval architects of Seattle's early years and the famous boatyards and shipwrights that applied world-renowned craftsmanship to their nautical visions. It follows the classic boats and yachts through the decades and introduces the vessels and the people who lovingly care for them today.

While the legislature is in session, 360 North brings you a minimum of 17 hours a day of coverage from the Capitol - Monday through Friday. As the deadline for the 90-day session looms, coverage will expand through weekends and late-night meetings. This will ensure that Alaskans throughout the state can watch decisions being made by their representatives.
