Coming to Terms with Northern Foods, Northern Futures

University of Alaska Fairbanks anthropology professor Dr. Craig Gerlach takes a look at the socioeconomic and climate impacts on the future of northern food systems. The discussion includes an historical overview of Alaska Native farming along the Yukon River and looks at new village-supported farming and gardening initiatives.

The program was recorded at the University of Alaska Southeast campus in Juneau this fall.

In the Company of Ravens

What do Edgar Allen Poe, Shakespeare, Koyukon people, the Hopi, Mark Twain and the rock band Counting Crows have in common?
They all draw inspiration from some of our most common but least understood birds: the crow and the raven.

Dr. John Marzluff, Professor of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington leads us on an investigation of the inspiration of ravens on people and our effects on these adaptable birds.

Candidates Talked, People Listened

On Thursday, October 30th, 360 North teamed up with public broadcasting partners from around the state to provide the final broadcast candidate debates of the election season. In the case of the race between Senator Ted Stevens and Mayor Mark Begich it was the only forum both candidates attended. An hour was dedicated to the candidates of that race and another hour directed toward Congressman Don Young and his opponent Ethan Berkowitz.

KTOO produced the coverage collaborating with KAKM and the Alaska Public Radio Network in KAKM's Anchorage studio. AlaskaOne, 360 North, KAKM and ARCS broadcast the debates on television and the audio feed was available to 26 APRN public radio member stations.

On Sunday, November 2nd, Hays Research Group asked Alaskans if they saw or heard the programs. 603 Alaska households were called at random.

35 percent watched or listened to the public broadcasting debates.

28.4 percent of those people said YES when asked if the debates helped them make up their mind or influenced the way they would vote on November 4.

The candidates talked and the people listened.... on Alaska Public Broadcasting.

Candidate Debates

The candidates for Alaska's hotly contested Congressional and Senatorial races will face off LIVE on Thursday, October 30th.

Moderated by former KTUU news director John Tracy, the forums will begin with republican Don Young and democrat Ethan Berkowitz who are vying for Alaska's only congressional seat. That will be followed by republican Ted Stevens facing democrat Mark Begich.
Each program will run for one hour and will be conducted before a studio audience.

Sanibel to Siberia

The documentary Sanibel to Siberia chronicles the creation of a monumental bronze sculpture by Alaska artist R.T. "Skip" Wallen to commemorate Alaska’s little-known role in the Lend-Lease program of World War II. The sculpture, commissioned by the Alaska-Siberia Research Center, portrays an American and a Russian pilot in cold-weather gear.

From 1942-45, the United States sent almost 8,000 newly-minted warplanes to the Soviet Union. The planes were flown from their points of manufacture around the U.S to Fairbanks where Soviet pilots trained on them and flew them across Bering Strait and Siberia to the war fronts.

Sanibel to Siberia chronicles the historical background for the memorial and Alaska’s little-known role in the top secret undertaking. . It goes on to document the process of creating the bronze sculpture in a studio on Sanibel Island, Florida, where the artist went to work when his Juneau studio proved too small for the production. The dedication in a park along the Chena River in Fairbanks, attended by dignitaries from five nations, concludes the film.

The documentary was produced by WGCU-TV, Fort Myers.

Creating Alaska: The Framers of the Alaska Constitution

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Alaska Constitutional Convention, former convention delegates Victor Fischer, George Sundborg, Sr. and Jack B. Coghill join convention economic consultant and temporary Secretary George Rogers and Chief Clerk Katie Hurley in looking at the Constitution as a living document and asking whether it has fulfilled their intentions.

The program was recorded at the University of Alaska Southeast in 2006.

360 North on ARCS

Tuesday, September 30, the Alaska Rural Communications Service (ARCS) will begin re-broadcasting the 360 North program stream. Our Tuesday evening broadcasts will now reach the additional communities that ARCS serves with low power transmitters. ARCS is seen in over 200 communities across Alaska, primarily in more rural areas.

For almost a year now, prime time on Tuesday has been a dedicated spot for Alaska Native and Native American programming. The 360 North programs that ARCS will be sharing with rural residents include Northwest Indian News, Native Report and Alaska documentary and cultural specials.

Economic Forum Airs Saturday

The Permanent Fund Annual Meeting that 360 North broadcast Monday night included a question and answer discussion with representatives from some of the nations top fund managers and investment strategists.

This very timely event gave Alaskans the opportunity to hear the thoughts, advice and discussions being provided to the people who manage the Alaska Permanent Fund. It was a rare opportunity to hear information and a perspective that is not always reflected in the mainstream press.

360 North will be repeating the Alaska Permanent Fund Annual Meeting this weekend. That broadcast will include the Economic Forum which lasts 90 minutes.

Heroes of the Slopes

Heroes of the Slopes is a one hour film on some of the top enabled skiers of our time. It was produced and hosted by Marc Romero, a former one-leg US Disabled Ski Team member turned top free-skier. The film contains a grass roots and inside perspective displaying many different and unique stories and characters. The people highlighted in this film are true mentors, leaders and heroes to those who watch.
