To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Alaska Statehood and to foster awareness and appreciation of our state’s history among the emerging leaders of Alaska, the University of Alaska has convened a second Conference of Young Alaskans this first week of January, 2009 in Girdwood. The conference again draws fifty-five delegates from across the state to consider the challenges facing Alaska and her people. Together, they are working to develop policy statements and proposed courses of action. The selected delegates represent the voice of Alaska’s next generation of leaders and the gathering demonstrates the potential and possibility of Alaskans putting aside their differences to work together for the common good.

Developed for the battlefield during World War II, the Jeep was called the wartime limousine of Presidents and Privates and was the vehicle of choice for transport and attack. Uncle Sam's Men tells the story of the men and women who served in the Tundra Army of Alaska's Territorial Guard during WWII. Over 6,000 Alaskans volunteered for the Territorial Guard. More than half were Alaskan Natives, predominantly Yup'ik and Inupiaq Eskimos.
Dr. Michael Veseth is a professor and Director of the International Political Economy Program at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where he has taught since 1975.
Before the Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch series became famous, another program documented the Bering Sea king crab fishery.
