Meeting of Alaska's Electoral College

Along with the rest of the nation, Alaska's electors will meet on Monday, December 15 and cast their electoral votes.

In Alaska, political parties select their electors and submit the names to the Division of Elections. Alaska’s electors are Roy Burkhart, Hope Nelson and Robert Brodie. The electors represent the political party of the Presidential candidate who won the popular vote in Alaska. For 2008 that is the Alaska Republican Party. Under state law each elector must pledge that he or she will cast their electoral vote for the candidate of the party.

Presiding at the meeting of the Alaska electors will be Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell.

The Great Age of Salmon and the PAF

Sail to Alaska aboard a windjammer. Fish salmon aboard the Bristol Bay sailboats that operated at the mercy of wind and tide. Climb aboard a fish trap! This is a program history buffs, maritime enthusiasts and fishermen will love.

This documentary brings to life a fascinating era in the history of commercial fishing in the last frontier. Featuring film footage dating back to 1926 and narrated by industry pioneer Stan Tarrant, The Great Age of Salmon and the PAF is the story of the early fishing industry in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, and of the Pacific American Fisheries company of Bellingham.

KYUK Documentary

Uncle Sam's Men tells the story of the men and women who served in the Tundra Army of Alaska's Territorial Guard during WWII. Over 6,000 Alaskans volunteered for the Territorial Guard. More than half were Alaskan Natives, predominantly Yup'ik and Inupiaq Eskimos.

The role these citizen soldiers played in defending Alaska's western and arctic coasts from the threat of Japanese invasion is remembered through the recollections of Tundra Army veterans, rare film footage and photographs of the Tundra Army in action.

This documentary was produced in 1995 by public television station KYUK in Bethel.

Visiting Scholar Talks About Globalization

Dr. Michael Veseth is a professor and Director of the International Political Economy Program at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where he has taught since 1975.

Veseth is currently researching a book on the global wine market. An economist by training, he has authored and edited more than a dozen books and is considered an authority on the political economy of globalization.

On November 22nd he spoke before and answered questions from an audience in the KTOO-TV studio in Juneau hosted by the Juneau World Affairs Council. 360 North is excited to be able to bring the event to viewers throughout Alaska.

Before the Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch series became famous, another program documented the Bering Sea king crab fishery.

Pots of Gold: The Profit and the Sorrow describes the remarkable Alaska fishery that made millionaires out of some and caused many to risk their lives in one of the most dangerous occupations on earth.

Charlie Jimmie - Growing Up Tlingit

In February 2004, Charlie Jimmie made a presentation at the Haines Borough Public Library about what it was like to grow up Tlingit in the Chilkat Valley.

Jimmie, born in 1932 in Yakutat, is a Raven/Coho and spent his early years traveling with his grandfather and parents. His uncle Tom Jimmie, a cultural historian and tradition bearer, was influential in his upbringing as was his adopted father, Austin Hammond, of the Chilkoot Lukaaxa'di.

University of Alaska Fairbanks anthropology professor Dr. Craig Gerlach takes a look at the socioeconomic and climate impacts on the future of northern food systems. The discussion includes an historical overview of Alaska Native farming along the Yukon River and looks at new village-supported farming and gardening initiatives.

The program was recorded at the University of Alaska Southeast campus in Juneau this fall.

In the Company of Ravens

What do Edgar Allen Poe, Shakespeare, Koyukon people, the Hopi, Mark Twain and the rock band Counting Crows have in common?
They all draw inspiration from some of our most common but least understood birds: the crow and the raven.

Dr. John Marzluff, Professor of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington leads us on an investigation of the inspiration of ravens on people and our effects on these adaptable birds.

Candidates Talked, People Listened

On Thursday, October 30th, 360 North teamed up with public broadcasting partners from around the state to provide the final broadcast candidate debates of the election season. In the case of the race between Senator Ted Stevens and Mayor Mark Begich it was the only forum both candidates attended. An hour was dedicated to the candidates of that race and another hour directed toward Congressman Don Young and his opponent Ethan Berkowitz.

KTOO produced the coverage collaborating with KAKM and the Alaska Public Radio Network in KAKM's Anchorage studio. AlaskaOne, 360 North, KAKM and ARCS broadcast the debates on television and the audio feed was available to 26 APRN public radio member stations.

On Sunday, November 2nd, Hays Research Group asked Alaskans if they saw or heard the programs. 603 Alaska households were called at random.

35 percent watched or listened to the public broadcasting debates.

28.4 percent of those people said YES when asked if the debates helped them make up their mind or influenced the way they would vote on November 4.

The candidates talked and the people listened.... on Alaska Public Broadcasting.
